A Finding Aid for the Records of the H.E.R.I.T.A.G.E, Inc. [2002]Part of the Local Organizations Collection at the Plainfield Public LibraryFinding aid prepared and encoded by Anna Henderson.
Biographical NoteH.E.R.I.T.A.G.E., Inc. [2002] stands for Helping to Enhance Resources by Incorporating The Arts to Gain Education. This non-profit organization, which launched in November 2003 by Donovan Soumas, was established to address the growing need to offer resources and opportunities in the arts and arts education to individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. Thus, the Mission is "to create and provide resources for disenfranchised communities who are interested in pursuing and enhancing their talents in the performing arts field" encompasses who they are and what they offer to the citizens of Plainfield and the greater community. H.E.R.I.T.A.G.E., Inc is comprised of four major programs. They are: The HERITAGE Fund, which provides tuition assistance to college students who pursue an education in the arts.
The HERITAGE United, which provides funding for disenfranchised members of the greater Plainfield community for private lessons and courses in the performing arts.
The HERITAGE "Pay-it-Forward" Mentoring Program, which is a volunteer based program that allows established artists to mentor aspiring artists in the performing arts.
The HERITAGE Show Choir, comprised of children from 7 to 17 who learn to sing, compose and copyright their own materials, as well as perform various musical styles including African and Caribbean folk songs, and Gospel and Broadway show tunes for the community at large, in such locations as nursing and senior citizen facilities, hospitals, churches, etc. This group has the distinction of being the 2006 McDonald's Gospel Fest winners in the Youth Choir category.
The main fund raising arm of the organization is The HERITAGE Chorale, a volunteer adult choir that sings varying styles of repertoire, highlighting (though not limited to) the music of African American composers. Choral membership consists of individuals from Plainfield and surrounding communities. The job of the Chorale is to perform in various venues to raise funds in support of the four H.E.R.I.T.A.G.E. Inc. programs. This collection includes the invitation to the announcement celebration of the organization. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and ContentsH.E.R.I.T.A.G.E., Inc.
