When Plainfield was in its heyday there were 9 hotels in town. One of the largest opened in 1879, the Netherwood Hotel. This massive hotel covered the block surrounded by Park Terrace, Belvidere Avenue, and Denmark Avenue. City dwellers from New York and Philadelphia vacationed here and enjoyed afternoon rides on bridle paths through Plainfield’s countryside.
In 1897 Dr. Robert Hunter leased the building as a sanitarium he called Hunterston. In 1906 Rose Truell purchased the hotel and renamed it Truell Hall to join Plainfield’s Truell Court and Truell Inn. City directories show no record of the hotel after 1915 when the name was "Hotel Netherwood." |
