Plainfield Porches

1900 - 1950

Porches were an important part of our American lifestyle.  As the pace of life slowed to allow time for leisure, the porch took on both social and architectural importance. Before air conditioning, Bermuda shorts, and television the veranda offered a place for family and friends to congregate to share cool drinks and conversation.  People gathered to escape the sun, meet neighbors, and entertain.  Swings and rockers provided a slight breeze if there was not a natural one. Whether you wanted to curl up on a porch hammock with a book or sit and watch the world go by the porch provides a haven from working. These historic photographs document porches throughout Plainfield from 1900-1950.
