Inez Phillips Durham has a lifelong career as a practicing psychologist, a public school administrator and a community advocate. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Douglass College, a Master of Social Work degree from Rutgers, The State University and a Doctor of Psychology degree from Rutgers, Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology. The focus of her professional work as well as of her volunteer activities has been on serving children and their families and on serving her community. Her dynamic approach as a public school administrator led to the establishment of cutting-edge programs in student services in two New Jersey public school systems. In serving families as staff psychologist at JFK, Inez received a certificate in recognition and appreciation of her valuable service to the JFK Health Systems, Inc. In Plainfield and the surrounding area, her community work began with an appointment by Mayor Paul O’Keeffe to the Reaction Advisory Committee in 1974. Her volunteer community activities have been extensive and led to many resolutions and citations from such as the National Association For The Advancement of Colored People, Senator Nicholas P. Scutari, 22nd New Jersey Legislative District, the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders, the Township Council of the Township of Piscataway, the NJ Coalition of Black Trade Unions, and the Board of Trustees of United Family and Children’s Society of Plainfield, NJ. Elected positions have been to the Plainfield City Committee, Ward 2, and District 10 and to The Plainfield Board of Education, where she served as Vice President and President. Her relationship with Plainfield Public Library dates back to 1968 when her family became card holders. She and John, her husband borrowed many books and records and Jennifer, her daughter participated in many of the wonderful programs for children. Always a volunteer and a friend for the library, Inez particularly enjoined serving on the 100 year anniversary committee and producing the New Jersey Author Night. Presently. Inez serves on the Board of Trustees of Plainfield Public Library as treasurer, as a member of the finance committee and as chair of the nominating committee.
